LA HABRA : Suspect Arrested in Apartment Break-In

A 32-year-old man broke into the apartment of a 98-year-old woman early Tuesday, stole a television and radio, then led police on a foot chase to his own apartment two blocks away, where he was arrested, authorities said.

Neighbors in the 200 block of West Whittier Boulevard called police shortly before 2:30 a.m. after seeing someone pry a window off and enter an apartment at The Meadows of La Habra, a retirement/convalescent home, Sgt. Matt Stoner said.

Officers arriving at the scene saw,through the broken window that the suspect was inside. The suspect crawled back out the window when the resident, who is nearly blind, awoke and called out, Stoner said.

Police said they confronted the suspect, who left a television at the window as he was escaping. At an alley nearby, he dropped a portable radio, police said.

The victim was not hurt.

Alex Vega Torres of La Habra was arrested at his home west of The Meadows on suspicion of residential burglary, Stoner said. He had the remote control to a television in his pocket, police said.
