* HEIGHT LIMITS: Approved an ordinance limiting the heights of apartment buildings to 30 feet in an area of Los Angeles between Ladera Heights and Inglewood on both sides of La Tijera Boulevard and 63rd Street.

* BRENTWOOD BENEFIT: Marvin Braude has introduced a proposal requesting that San Vicente Boulevard between Bringham and Darlington avenues in Brentwood be closed Oct. 18 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the “Great Tastes of Brentwood,” a benefit for Kenter Canyon Elementary School and the California Special Olympics.

* GTE GRANT: Approved a proposal to accept a $14,983 donation from GTE California Inc. as final payment of a $60,000 grant from GTE. The money supports the city’s “model neighborhood” program in the Venice/Oakwood Community of the 6th Council District. The program is designed to promote various projects, including job referrals, graffiti removal and fighting street gangs in neighborhoods.

HOW THEY VOTED: How Westside representatives voted on selected issues.

* TRAINING PROGRAM: Approved a proposal allowing an agreement between the city and the Los Angeles Unified School District to create a program at Jefferson High School to train youth and adult students in job training skills, provide job counseling and job referrals. The program will include child care. The project will use state funds and will not exceed $350,000. Passed: 14-0. Voting yes: Marvin Braude, Ruth Galanter, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Michael Woo and Zev Yaroslavsky. John Ferraro was absent.

* BREAST CANCER FUND: Approved a motion supporting pending Assembly Bill 3410, which would increase the cigarette tax by 2 cents per pack and create a breast cancer fund. The money would be used for research, cure and prevention. Passed: 11-0. Voting yes: Braude, Galanter, Holden, Ridley-Thomas and Yaroslavsky. Ferraro and Woo were absent.
