Bay Birds--The next count is Saturday for the Sea & Sage chapter of the National Audubon Society’s ongoing bird survey at the Upper Newport Bay Reserve.

Participants are asked to meet 20 minutes before the start time at the California Department of Fish and Game’s trailer on Shellmaker Island, off Backbay Drive.

The count takes about 2 1/2 hours. This time of year, the reserve is home to such species as black-necked stilts, American avocets and black skimmers.

Bay Tours--There will also be a guided tour of the Upper Newport Bay Reserve Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

The tour is $2.50, or free for California Wildlife Campaign members. The naturalist-led tour lasts about 2 1/2 hours.
