A female inmate from a county jail died in surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center after several fainting spells, authorities said Monday.

The inmate was identified as Patricia Berry, 38, by county Medical Examiner Charles Kelley. Kelley said an autopsy revealed that the woman had a brain aneurysm.

A deputy from the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility saw Berry sitting on a cell bench about 8 a.m. Saturday and that as Berry tried to stand up, she collapsed and fainted. She was taken to the jail’s infirmary, where medical workers called an ambulance, sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Rider said.

Berry was revived but then lost consciousness again as the ambulance took her to the hospital. Doctors notified the Sheriff’s Department that she died in surgery shortly before 1 p.m., Rider said.
