Doris M. Brewer; Retired CSUN Professor

Doris M. Brewer, a retired Cal State Northridge radio, television and film professor, has died at a Glendale hospital. She was 67.

A longtime Sun Valley resident, Mrs. Brewer died Thursday of leukemia, said her husband, Robert Brewer.

Born in Meadville, Pa., she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University and in 1946 came to California, where she taught high school in Newhall and Whittier. Mrs. Brewer later taught in Burbank, at Jordan Middle School and Burroughs High School, where she was an English teacher and speech coach.

After earning a doctorate from UCLA in 1970, she taught speech communication at Cal State Hayward. She returned to the Los Angeles area in 1973 to teach the same subject at Ambassador College in Pasadena, where she also was director of the school’s public radio station. In 1978, Mrs. Brewer began teaching radio, television and film classes at CSUN. She retired in 1984.

Mrs. Brewer was a member of American Women in Radio and Television, which once voted her Woman of the Year, and also appeared in television commercials and performed in little theater.

In addition to her husband of 19 years, Mrs. Brewer is survived by her stepsons Stephen Brewer of Roseburg, Ore., and Jonathan Brewer of Palos Verdes Estates; stepdaughter Marta Hedlund of Marina del Rey, and four step-grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. today at Sunland Neighborhood Church, 10632 Oro Vista Ave., Sunland. Burial will be private. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Hollywood Hills, is handling the arrangements.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Brewer’s name to the Leukemia Society of America or the American Cancer Society.
