Boris Becker’s latest bid for his first 1992 victory on clay ended abruptly Tuesday as the German was beaten, 6-3, 6-4, by Frenchman Olivier Delaitre in the $1.04-million Grand Prix tournament at Stuttgart, Germany.

Delaitre needed only 83 minutes to dispose of Becker, the world’s sixth-ranked player, disappointing the partisan crowd of 6,000.

Russia’s Andrei Olhovskiy, who stunned top-seeded Jim Courier at Wimbledon, beat Henri Leconte, 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (12-10).

Bjorn Borg was eliminated, 6-4, 7-6, by fellow Swede Thomas Hogstedt in the first round of the NationsBank Classic at Washington, but before the match said he hopes to play again at Wimbledon.

“I want to play in the regular tournament, not the seniors,” Borg said.

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez began Spain’s Federation Cup title defense at Frankfurt, Germany, with victories in a 2-1 first-round decision over Belgium.

Sanchez Vicario needed only 59 minutes to beat Sabine Appelmans, 6-1, 6-2, and Martinez overwhelmed Dominique Monami, 6-1, 6-4, on the red clay courts of Frankfurt’s Waldstadion. Next up for Spain is Canada, which spoiled South Africa’s first appearance in 15 years with a 2-1 victory.

The Strings defeated the Wichita Advantage, 25-22, at the Forum in a World TeamTennis match. The Strings are 3-1; Wichita is 1-3.
