Government Is Nation’s Largest Employer: More people are employed by federal, state and local governments in the United States than in all private factories combined--despite 12 years of Republican Administrations trumpeting private enterprise. Last month, federal, state and local government jobs rose to 18.6 million from 16.4 million in 1980, according to the Labor Department. Manufacturing employment, meanwhile, stood at 18.2 million at the end of last month, down from 20.3 million in June, 1980, and a far cry from the more than 25 million recorded in June, 1990. The figures indicate that during the last two years of the Bush Administration, one-quarter of the nation’s manufacturing jobs disappeared.
