YORBA LINDA : 2 Councilmen Take Candidacy Papers

Share

Two of the three City Council incumbents up for reelection have pulled candidacy papers, indicating they will run again in November.

Mayor Irwin M. Fried, who has been on the council since 1976, and Councilman Mark Schwing, who was elected four years ago, obtained the necessary applications to file as candidates this week. The third incumbent up for reelection, Gene Wisner, hadn’t pulled papers as of Wednesday.

Wisner could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but his wife said the nine-year councilman hadn’t decided yet whether he will seek reelection.

“He’s still on the fence,” she said.

Veteran Councilman Fried, an attorney, said he wants to continue on the council because “I think I’m making a good contribution to the quality of life in the city and I’d like to continue doing that.”

Even if a three-term limit is approved by voters in November, Fried would still be allowed to serve another 12 years, since the proposed initiative does not count years served before January, 1993.

Fried and fellow longtime council veteran Henry W. Wedaa have expressed opposition to term limits.
