Morris, Yanagisawa Ousted in Second Round of Public Links Golf

Mark Morris of Yorba Linda and William Yanagisawa of UC Irvine were eliminated in the second round of match play Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Brooklyn Park, Minn.

Morris, who played at Esperanza High and Cal State Dominguez Hills, was beaten by Dean Kobane of Livonia, Mich., 4 and 3. Morris had defeated Michael Jarman of Excelsior Springs, Mo., 3 and 2, in the first round, which also was played Wednesday.

Yanagisawa was eliminated, 2 and 1, by Edward Smith of Tempe, Ariz., in the second round. Yanagisawa beat Marc Redman of Lexington, Ky., 2 and 1, in the first round.

Tiger Woods of Cypress and Scott Gipson of Huntington Beach each made the cut, but are 10 shots off the lead after the second round of the Tournament of Champions played at Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Roswell, Ga.

Woods shot 75 and Gibson 76 in the second round. Joe Garner (156) of Lake Forest and Paul Hinkle (163) of Costa Mesa failed to make the cut.

In the girls’ division, Alicia Allison of Santa Ana is in fifth place at 153 but is 11 shots off the lead. Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza is at 155.

David Warady of Huntington Beach won the 26th day of the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace to extend his overall lead.

Warady covered the 44.9-mile run from Idaho Springs, Colo., through Denver and to Aurora, Colo., in 6 hours 57 minutes 57 seconds.
