Share

TONIGHT

* Jerry Teets With David Tolegian (Sea Cove, 801 Shoreline Drive, Santa Barbara, 965-2917) . Versatile keyboardist Teets, who normally plays with local trumpet whiz Jeff Elliot when he’s not on tour with Les McCann, is joined by the muscular-sounding Ventura saxist Dave Tolegian for jazz and funk-jazz by the sea (also July 23).

FRIDAY

* Jimmy Calire (Wheeler Hot Springs, 16825 Maricopa Highway, Ojai, 646-8131) . The Venturan keyboard journeyman dishes up blues-flavored jazz for dining and listening pleasure.

* Michael Stephans Quartet (Sea Cove) . The striking drummer Stephans and bassist Chris Symer make up two-thirds of the Theo Saunders Trio, and here they’ll be joined by special guests.

SATURDAY

* Wayne Peet (Wheeler Hot Springs) . He plays left-of-center jazz and other odd stylistic persuasions--including work with his band, Doppler Funk--but at Wheeler’s, Peet exercises the fine art of solo jazz piano (also Sunday brunch at Wheeler’s).

SUNDAY

* Julie Kelley (Sea Cove) . The L. A.-based vocalist has a few albums to her credit, and she approaches songs with distinctive flair and rare subtlety.

* Jennifer Robin (Joseppi’s, 434 State St. , Santa Barbara, 962-5516) . The singer-songwriter deftly blends jazz and folk. She released her debut album, “Fish Up a Tree,” a year ago and is working the follow-up. A rare appearance at her old stomping ground.

* Hank Allen (Red Lion Inn, Barra los Arcos Lounge, 633 E. Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara, 564-4333) . Allen has been organizing the Sunday and Monday jazz at Red Lion and appears this night with Santa Barbaran pianist Debbie Denke, drummer Tom Devaney and trumpeter Fred Karlin, a local film and TV composer who likes to dust off his jazz chops.

* The Channel Cities Jazz Society (Alexander’s, 1050 Schooner Drive, Ventura, 644-3824) . Dixieland Jazz Concert 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Musicians are invited to sit in.

MONDAY

* Bob Ledner (Sea Cove) . Flute is his tool of choice, and he’s been sounding off with it, eloquently, for years (also July 27).

* Hank Allen With Adam Asarnow (Red Lion Inn) . Onetime Santa Barbaran and current Los Angeleno pianist Asarnow can sculpt smart solos and give old tunes a new reason to live.

TUESDAY

* Joe Vento and His Big Band (Mullarkey’s at the Radisson Suite Hotel, 2101 Vineyard Ave., Oxnard, 988-0130) . The multifaceted Vento attracts top-flight jazz musicians, including some recently relieved of their duties at the “Tonight Show.” It’s the hottest jazz ticket in the county at the moment. Dancing is allowed, but so is well-rewarded listening (Vento also plays in combo format Wednesday and Thursday).

* Jazzheads (Hungry Hunter, 487 N . Moorpark Rd., Thousand Oaks, 497-3925) . Saxophonist Brian McCann, mild-mannered music store proprietor by day, descends into this cozy, dark bar every Tuesday night. McCann and his band, usually including guitarist Brad Rabuchin and bassist Bob Mair, serve up pop-jazz-funk favorites and a few straight-ahead tunes (also July 28).

WEDNESDAY

* Mark Kramer and Chris Judge (Joseppi’s) . Two solid guitar-wielding jazzers do it up duoistically.

NEXT THURSDAY, 7/23

* Jerry Teets (Sea Cove) . The keyboardist brings on board either Tom Buckner or Dave Tolegian--two die-hards from Ventura--on sax.

FRIDAY, 7/24

* Theo Saunders Trio (Sea Cove) . The vividly inventive pianist, from New York by way of Ojai and Oxnard and now a Santa Barbaran, leaves mystery and energy when he plays. Bassist Chris Symer and drummer Michael Stephans round out the ranks.

* Vadim Zilbershtein (Wheeler Hot Springs) . The guitarist puts his spin on the jazz standards repertoire.

SATURDAY, 7/25

* Caixa de Sol (Joseppi’s) . Intimate Brazilian jazz from a group whose name translates to “box of sun,” featuring bassist Nico Abondolo.

* Vadim Zilbershtein (Wheeler Hot Springs) . The guitarist puts his spin on the jazz standards repertoire.

* Art Renshaw (Sea Cove) . The jazz guitarist from Los Angeles by way of Down Under plays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

* Theo Saunders Quartet (Sea Cove) . The trio is joined by special guest TBA.

SUNDAY, 7/26

* Randy Tico and Cool Breeze (Sea Cove) . Bassist-about-town Tico heads up this flexible jazz unit in the 3-to-6 shift.

* Brad Rabuchin (Joseppi’s) . The Los Angeles-based guitarist can veer to the right or the left stylistically. He is joined here by a guest guitarist for an evening of original jazz.

MONDAY, 7/27

* Hank Allen (Red Lion Inn) . The ongoing Monday-night saga with rotating pianists.

TUESDAY, 7/28

* Pelin (Sea Cove) . The sturdy Latin-jazz band Pelin, having gone to Costa Rica in July, will appear here in a stripped-down incarnation.

WEDNESDAY, 7/29

* Leslie Lembo and Raw Silk (Sea Cove) . Lembo has the voice of roughed-up silk, and this band helps guide it through a varied terrain of R & B, jazz and blues.

NICE WHILE IT LASTED DEPT.: Beseiged by the recessionary demons, SoHo has closed its doors and thus closed the doors on one of the finest jazz clubs Santa Barbara has known. With this seven-night-a-week venue, owner Nancy Weiss helped initiate a burst of jazz activity in town.
