Inspired by the funky looks worn by such rock groups as Nirvana, Fugazi and Pearl Jam, flannel walking shorts have become the latest fashion statement in the San Fernando Valley, particularly among the surf and skate crowds.

“You might think that such a fabric would be unpopular in warm weather,” notes Mona Fleschler, co-owner of Valley Skate and Surf in North Hills, “but it’s lightweight and soft. Besides, it seems to be the current trend so the fact that it’s thought of as a cold weather fabric doesn’t seem to matter.”

Indeed, the trend leans toward big and baggy shorts, at least two sizes larger than normal. Detailing includes pockets and drawstring waists. Guys can either bag the shorts and wear them off the hip or pull the drawstring waist tight. Lengths may vary, but it’s considered cool for the shorts to be at least 10 1/2 inches long in order to cover the knees.

Although the fabric is usually 100% cotton, it’s featured in a variety of colorful plaids, ranging from soft and muted patterns to strong and bold statements.

To complete the look, add an oversized T-shirt, construction boots or Vans, and perhaps a baseball cap.

Flannel shorts are sold at a number of area stores, including Bullock’s department stores and Pacific Sunwear in the Northridge Fashion Center. Prices vary between $28 and $45.
