A man shot and killed his would-be robber, and police critically wounded a parolee they say was trying to stab another man in two of several incidents of Los Angeles-area weekend violence, authorities said Sunday. In all, at least six people were killed.

In one incident, four suspects approached a trio of men on Parthenia Street in North Hills shortly before 8:30 p.m. Saturday and tried to rob them at gunpoint, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Jill Niles said.

One of the three accosted men pulled out a gun and began firing, Niles said. One would-be robber, an 18-year-old man, was hit several times in the chest and died at the scene in the 15000 block of Parthenia. The other assailants ran from the area, Niles said.

The identities of the robbery victims and the dead man were not released. Detectives are investigating the shooting, which they said was justifiable.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, Santa Monica police on foot patrol were called to a fight at the King George V bar in the 300 block of Santa Monica Boulevard.

As officers approached, they saw one man trying to stab another outside, police said. One officer, identified only as a 20-year veteran, fired several times at the man wielding the knife, investigators said.

Leonard Sterling, 27, was struck three times and critically wounded, officers said. A crowd of Saturday night revelers were outside near the bar, but none was hurt.

Sterling has an “extensive criminal record” and is on parole, said Sgt. Harry Kutzbach. The sergeant said he had no details of Sterling’s record. Police may ask the district attorney’s office to file charges of assault with a deadly weapon against Sterling, Kutzbach said.

Also on Saturday night, a Panorama City man was fatally stabbed after he tried to flirt with a woman riding in a car next to his vehicle, police said.

Juan Carlos Flores, 22, was stopped at a red light at Nordhoff Street and Van Nuys Boulevard about 9:40 p.m. when he smiled and motioned to the woman, said Los Angeles Police Detective Ed Heissel.

Several men riding in the woman’s car became enraged, got out and confronted Flores, investigators said. A fight broke out and one man stabbed Flores in the chest with a knife, police said. Friends of Flores rushed him to Olive View Hospital, where he died shortly before midnight. Detectives said the incident could be gang-related.

In Alhambra, a 20-year-old man died in a bar parking lot when another patron shot him in the face and then ran him over with his car shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, sheriff’s deputies said.

The two men argued outside the Serena Bar and Restaurant in the 300 block of East Valley Boulevard, Deputy Irma Becerra said.

After the victim was shot, his assailant and another man got in a small, late-model black car, fired several more shots and ran over the victim, Becerra said. A bar security guard returned fire, striking the car, the deputy said. The dead man’s name was not released.

About half an hour later, two youths were shot in a drive-by gang attack just west of the city of Vernon, police said.

A 16-year-old boy was killed and a 13-year-old boy was shot in the leg at about 1:25 a.m. in the 800 block of East 46th Street, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. David Storaker.

The teen-agers were taken to Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center, where the 16-year-old was declared dead with gunshot wounds to his head and back, police said. The younger boy was listed in stable condition.

In a second incident just west of Vernon, one person was shot and killed and another was wounded at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday in the 4400 block of Compton Avenue, police said. No further details were available late Sunday.

Also Sunday, a customer at a Walnut convenience store was beaten to death after he argued with another customer, deputies said.

Timothy Davis, 25, of Ontario exchanged words with another customer inside a 7-Eleven store in the 1400 block of Kem Way about 2:30 a.m., Becerra said. That customer left the store, but soon returned with Darryn Yost, 22, who began beating Davis behind the store, she said.

Davis suffered severe head injuries and was taken to San Dimas Community Hospital, where he died about 9:30 a.m., Becerra said.

Yost was arrested at an apartment complex near the store about an hour after the beating, Becerra said. He has been booked on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail at the Walnut Sheriff’s Station. Becerra said detectives do not know what caused the argument.

Meanwhile, a minister active in efforts to maintain a truce between black gangs asked law enforcement and government officials to support an amnesty program for gang members who turn in stolen or illegally owned guns.

The Rev. Carl Washington said he hoped that between 200 to 300 weapons would be turned over to authorities by Sept. 1, including many guns and rifles stolen during the riots.

Gang members who give up their weapons should be assured that no fingerprints will be traced or arrests sought, Washington said. Preliminary discussions with law enforcement officials have been encouraging, he said.
