North East Trees, a volunteer tree planting group, has received notice that its project to plant native trees along 1.75 miles of the Arroyo Seco has been approved for funding by the California Transportation Commission. The proposed greenbelt will connect the south end of Elysian Park with Ernest E. Debs Regional Park.

Funding for the project, estimated to cost $260,000, will be provided on a reimbursement basis after the state Department of Transportation inspects the work. Susan Kromka, a board member, said the group is negotiating with Caltrans for reimbursement as various phases of the tree planting are completed.
