San Diego : Suspect Chooses Death Over Arrest

Share

A man in his late 20s whom police were about to arrest Wednesday went into the bathroom of his Golden Hill home and fatally shot himself in the chest while officers waited outside the apartment door, police said.

“The guy elected to shoot himself, rather than be arrested, which is odd,” Lt. John Welter said.

The man was wanted on a misdemeanor traffic-related warrant, and was suspected of stealing a computer central processing unit from Sun Computers in Mira Mesa, Welter said.

Police arrived at his Juniper Street apartment about 8:10 a.m. and spoke to him through the door.

“They said we have a warrant for your arrest and want to talk to you about a stolen computer,” Welter said. The man refused to open the door and officers heard the sound of a shot.

They found him fully clothed in the bathtub with a single bullet wound to the chest, Welter said.

Welter said the apartment was full of computer equipment and other electronic devices.

“There may have been more to it” than the one computer unit, he said.
