CAMARILLO : Council OKs Hike in Trash Hauling Rates

Share

The Camarillo City Council has adopted a new rate structure for residential trash collection that charges residents by the amount of waste they generate instead of a flat monthly fee.

The council also has approved an increase in commercial refuse collection rates that will cost businesses an average of 20% more per week.

The separate votes, both unanimous, came after public hearings late Wednesday.

The new residential charges are expected to be in place by October, and the commercial fees will be in effect retroactive to July 1, Community Services Director John W. Elwell said.

All Camarillo residents now pay $17.17 per month for trash collection. Under the new rate structure, residents can pay $12.40 a month to fill a 34-gallon can, $17.85 for a 101-gallon can or $23 for two containers holding a total of 165 gallons.

If residents occasionally want to throw out more trash than allowed under the regular charge, they must pay additional fees, ranging from $5 to $10. Twice a year, in the spring and at Christmas, the city will allow residents to dispose of an unlimited amount of refuse.
