Fred E. Hummel; Engineer, Activist

Fred E. Hummel, a prominent engineer and community activist who fought against excessive growth in the Ojai Valley, died at Ojai Valley Hospital after a long illness. He was 86.

A Ventura County resident for 57 years, Hummel was born in Los Angeles. He was a metallurgical engineering graduate of South Dakota School of Mines. He worked for Shell Oil for many years and his experience included electrical, petroleum and mechanical engineering. In 1979, Hummel was named Ventura County Engineer of the Year. Before retiring in 1990, he became a consulting engineer.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Marianne; his son, Fred E. Hummel Jr., who was project manager of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley and the former state architect, and his daughter, Marilyn Coe of Fall River Mills, Calif.

He also is survived by his brother, Ernest Hummel of Vacaville; his sister, Alta Kincaid of Denver; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ojai Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Peter Whitelock, pastor, officiating. Ted Mayr Funeral Home of Ventura will handle cremation arrangements.
