IRVINE : Grant Will Increase Sobriety Checkpoints
The Police Department has received a $13,000 grant to buy a trailer that will serve as a roadside sobriety checkpoint and enough anti-drunk driving literature to set up monthly checkpoints in the city.
The trailer will allow police to move the equipment more easily between locations, saving enough time and money to conduct more frequent checkpoint stops, according to a report by traffic Sgt. Elwyn Murray. Currently, the department has funds to operate four or five checkpoints a year.
Murray received the grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The department will purchase the trailer as soon as the City Council formally accepts the grant Tuesday.
The grant provides $11,000 for a fully equipped sobriety trailer and $2,000 for public information and education material.
