A young man was shot by police Sunday after his parents called them to report that he was acting erratically.

Datminh Vu, 20, of 1420 W. Central Ave. was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with a wound in his right arm described as not life-threatening.

According to John Gabelman of the Santa Ana Police Department, police were summoned early Sunday by Vu’s parents, who reported that he had locked himself into a bathroom and climbed out onto the roof.

By the time police arrived, Gabelman said, Vu had crawled back into the house and was in a bedroom where he had broken a window. He began throwing pieces of glass at his father and police, Gabelman said, until one officer, “fearing for his life and the life of others in the room,” shot Vu in the right arm.

Police would not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

The incident is being investigated jointly by the Police Department and the Orange County district attorney’s office, Gabelman said.
