Benburb Upsets Alydeed in Prince of Wales Stakes
Benburb, a 24-1 shot, pulled away from Alydeed in the final strides Sunday to win the Prince of Wales Stakes in one of the biggest upsets in Canadian horse racing history.
“It feels great, it feels fabulous,” said trainer Phil England after the victory in the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. “I felt we’d be close, but I didn’t think we’d beat him.”
Benburb earned $107,700 of the $179,500 purse.
Benburb caught Alydeed, a 1-9 choice, at the sixteenth pole. Alydeed fought back, but Benburb jumped out a couple of strides to win by half a length. Benburb paid $51 to win.
Benburb finished the 1 3/16-mile muddy course in 1:57 2-5. Ragnarok finished third, followed by Rodin, Grand Hooley and Judge Carson.
