Two people were killed and another seriously injured in Van Nuys early Monday when a drunk driver ran a red light and slammed into a car full of young people, Los Angeles police said.

Lionel McGinnis, 37, of Van Nuys was held without bail Monday on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter in the 12:45 a.m. collision at Woodman Avenue and Valerio Street, Officer M. Ryan-Correa said.

According to police, McGinnis was driving east on Valerio when he ran a red light and rammed the passenger side of a car heading south on Woodman. The car was carrying four Van Nuys young people home after an evening playing video games at a miniature golf course.

Two passengers in the back seat, 25-year-old Eynar Contreras and 16-year-old Maria Henrique, were killed instantly. Front-seat passenger Anna Patricia Suarez, 18, was in serious condition with head injuries. The driver, Rocael Contreras, 23, was treated for minor injuries and released.

Rocael and Eynar Contreras were brothers, police said.

McGinnis suffered cuts and bruises but otherwise was not injured.

Ryan-Correa said McGinnis had spent the evening drinking in a bar and was apparently on his way home at the time of the crash. He was arrested because he appeared intoxicated, Ryan-Correa said. A blood sample was taken to determine the level of alcohol in his blood.
