NEWPORT BEACH : Man Crossing Street Is Hit, Killed by Van
A La Jolla man was struck and killed by a van Wednesday afternoon as he was running across a street at Fashion Island, police said.
Jay Richard Eisenberg, 33, was struck on Newport Center Drive East near Santa Rosa Drive about 1:30 p.m. He suffered head and upper body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Andy Gonis said.
Witnesses told police that Eisenberg was running across the street in the 600 block of Newport Center Drive East as the eastbound van changed lanes. Witnesses said the van driver tried to avoid hitting him, Gonis said.
Gonis said Eisenberg apparently saw the van and tried to get out of the way but could not.
The driver of the van was not cited pending further investigation, Gonis said. He was not injured.
