Veteran road course racer Dorsey Schroeder agreed to be the stand-by driver for injured NASCAR points leader Davey Allison at the Watkins Glen International

If needed for the Aug. 9 race, Schroeder would be the second replacement driver in as many events for Allison, who broke his right forearm and right wrist and cracked his collarbone in a crash at Pocono International Raceway July 19.

After running five laps at Talladega, Ala., last week to gain valuable points, Allison was replaced by Bobby Hillin Jr., who finished third in the Diehard 500.

Hillin is committed to run the Watkins Glen race with another team and doesn’t have the experience Schroeder has on road courses, Allison crew chief Larry McReynolds said.

Allison has withdrawn from the International Race of Champions series for the rest of the season. He will be credited with a 12th-place finish in the remaining events, scheduled for Saturday and Aug. 15, both at Michigan International Speedway.
