THE WORD ON WHAT’S HIP AND WHAT’S HYPE
Dead Threads
Think of Jerry Garcia, lead guitarist for the Grateful Dead, and you think of his ever-present frizzy hair and T-shirts. Now the eternal hippie has entered the fashion biz, so Deadheads can buy one of his . . . neckties? For sure! Stonehenge Ltd. put Garcia’s abstract designs onto ties and--surprise!--his followers love it. “The three-piece-suit, working-class Deadheads are really stoked,” says fan Lob Instagon of Huntington Beach. The Jerry Garcia Band is playing Irvine Meadows Saturday (Garcia’s 50th birthday), but don’t expect to see the ties there. They’re available at The Broadway ($27.50).
Mini Stompers
You’re a punk-rock parent, but all you can find are those neon-and-Velcro baby shoes. What to do? Turn to Dr. Marten’s, which set the standard for punk-comfy footwear. Now there are versions of its classic clunky shoes in kid sizes 1 to 6 ($52 to $58). They’re a godsend for moms like Angel Reidling of Costa Mesa, who dresses 1-year-old Sharkie in his “Docs” and skull-backed leather jacket whenever it’s time to watch Papa Jamie perform. He’s the drummer for Drink Deep, a local band. Besides being black and cute, Doc’s shoes have air-cushion soles to “provide good support for kids learning to walk,” says Mom.
Spider Eyes
Toss out that worthless mascara. The quickest aid to eyes this year is a fringe of long, lovely fake lashes. Combined with other ‘40s and ‘70s fashion flashbacks, these lashes assure The Look. “Batting those big ol’ eyes will make you feel so glamorous,” says stylist Kenneth Michael of Newport Beach. He recommends using easy-to-apply lashes that come on a clear band and trimming the ends. Much better than gluing on individual lashes. He applied them to R & B group the Cover Girls for an appearance on “Arsenio” and to all the participants of “The Supermodels of the World,” which airs on KCAL-TV next month.
