The resident of a downtown San Diego residency hotel was killed Saturday during an apparent argument, authorities said.

The victim, identified as Greg Wade Mathews, was shot once in the chest about 2 p.m. at The Buckner hotel in the 1000 block of F Street, San Diego police said. He died later during surgery at UC San Diego Medical Center.

Officers said two men arrived at the hotel in a white van shortly before the shooting and entered a back room with the victim. Shots later rang out.

Mathews’ two teen-age sons, aged 13 and 15, witnessed the shootings, officers said.

Donald Wade Palmer, 31, was arrested at the scene by officers who responded to calls that a man with a gun was seen entering the hotel. Police blocked off the hotel for several hours Saturday as they sorted out details of the shooting.

Four other people with Palmer at the time of his arrest were also held for questioning.

Police said drugs might have been involved in the slaying.
