Countywide : District to Sell Recycled Water

Directors of the largest imported water supplier in Ventura County have decided to get into the business of selling reclaimed water.

The Calleguas Municipal Water District board Wednesday night unanimously gave preliminary approval to a proposal to sell up to 1,300 acre-feet of reclaimed water each year, or more than 400 million gallons.

General Manager Donald Kendall said the proposal will give Calleguas the ability to tap into reclaimed water supplies in years of drought.

“It’s new water for us--just like drilling a well,” board President Patrick Miller said. The plan will be brought back to the board for final approval Aug. 19.

According to a draft agreement with the Triunfo County Sanitation District, Calleguas would purchase reclaimed water and sell it to customers in Oak Park and the North Ranch area of Thousand Oaks.

Although the reclaimed water would not be drinkable, it is treated so that it can be used to irrigate landscaped areas.
