City Council incumbents Donald L. Bone and Don R. Griffin filed nomination papers with the city clerk’s office Friday, officially making them candidates for reelection in November.

In addition, management consultant Robert Roefs, realtor John Dade and college student Charles L. Menzies filed papers to run in the November election.

Two of the five council seats are up for election.

Bone, 49, a painting contractor, is seeking a second term. Griffin, 61, an architect and planner, is seeking his fifth term.

Roefs, 57, who has lived in the city 35 years, criticized spending the council has approved for consultants, saying the information consultants can provide should be derived from city personnel during tough economic times.

“We have slid into a recession nationally and locally and I think that in a city it takes a whole different approach. The city tends to spend money regardless of the economy,” he said.

The former parks and recreation commissioner said his work in that area made him realize that the city must tap into other resources, such as federal aid, for local programs.

Menzies, 20, an Orange Coast College student majoring in political science and film, said he hopes to work on environmental issues at a local level and to lobby the state not to take more of the local sales tax revenue from the city.

Dade, 40, served on the board of directors of the Buena Park Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of the city’s Fine Arts Commission. He has also served on the Citizens Advisory Committee.

He said he would like to reduce some of the user fees charged to small businesses. He also says code enforcement on apartment owners should be stepped up.
