ENCINO : Millions of Gallons of Water Leak During Filling of Lake

Share

The Army Corps of Engineers took the blame Friday for the leakage of millions of gallons of water this week when the city began filling Lake Balboa in a park in the Sepulveda Basin in Encino.

The water seeped from the lake into a long-abandoned sewer pipe and ultimately into Bull Creek, which flows into the Los Angeles River.

Regional water quality officials, however, said the leak had an unforeseen--but welcome--side effect: The millions of gallons of water rushing into Bull Creek south of Victory Boulevard flushed out contaminants that were blamed for killing more than 1,000 fish.

Los Angeles City officials had to halt their efforts to fill the lake.
