San Diego police on Monday were investigating an accident involving a Sheriff’s Department squad car that was speeding on a downtown street over the weekend, authorities said.
Two deputies assigned to County Jail downtown were driving west on Ash Street at 4th Avenue Saturday night when their car was struck in the intersection by another car, Sheriff’s Sgt. Glenn Revell said.
Authorities did not identify the driver of the other car. Revell said department officials did not know if the driver was injured in the accident.
The two deputies, driver Randy Visconti and Anthony Andrzejewski, were treated at Mercy Hospital for minor injuries and released, Revell said.
Deputies told investigators they were traveling on an emergency and were passing through a green light when hit, Revell said. However, he said witnesses said the deputies ran a red light and were not using a siren or overhead lights to warn other motorists.
