HUNTINGTON BEACH : Community Theater at College to Reopen

After undergoing an $85,000 refurbishment, Golden West College’s Community Theater will reopen Saturday.

An 8 p.m. presentation of the musical “Peter Pan” will commemorate the event. Built in 1971, the Community Theater was designed as a teaching theater and classroom for students seeking careers in drama. The theater has also served as a cultural outlet for Huntington Beach. About 18,000 people a year attend plays and concerts there.

Over the years, age and wear and tear had taken their toll on the theater’s interior. College officials said the theater needed a new carpet, seat reupholstering, wall coverings and repainting.

To raise the $85,000 for the project, the Golden West College Foundation conducted a yearlong fund-raising campaign.

“The refurbishing project was the first capital campaign that Golden West College has undertaken,” said Glenda Blackburn, executive director of the Golden West College Foundation. “During intermission, we will introduce a recognition plaque in honor of our 21 donors in the theater foyer.”
