Rose Bowl Hall of Fame Honors Nine Inductees

Former USC fullback Sam Cunningham, Stanford quarterback Frankie Albert and Purdue quarterback Bob Griese were among nine athletes inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame at ceremonies last week.

Other inductees include Michigan halfback Bob Chappuis and Washington Coach Jim Owens.

Bill Daddio of Pittsburgh, brothers Shy and Hollis Huntington of Oregon and Elmer Layden of Notre Dame were honored posthumously.

Tom Morgan, a graduate of Covina High, will become the executive director of the Southern California Golf Assn. in June of 1993.

Morgan, 51, was the executive secretary of the SCGA for 10 years and has also served as the executive director of the Century Club of San Diego and the Professional Golf Tour event at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.

Morgan attended UC Santa Barbara and also worked at the school as an athletic administrator.

Rick Mountain of Orange and Margaret Garstka of Alexandria, Va., were the men’s and women’s division winners in a mini-triathlon Saturday at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.

Mountain completed the 500-yard swim, 20-K bike ride and 4-K run in 51 minutes 42 seconds. Kevin Bree of San Diego was second in 52:53 and Kyle Bailey of Azusa was third (53:32).

Garstka won the women’s event in 1:01.04. Nancy Baird of Irvine was second (1:02.07) and Evelyn Vance of Rancho Cucamonga was third (1:04.26).

Select Copy Systems of Irwindale is sponsoring a charity golf tournament Monday at the Los Angeles Wilshire Country Club.

Proceeds will benefit several Los Angeles-area charities and children’s programs.

The $275 entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, an awards banquet and eligibility for prizes.

A double-elimination three-on-three basketball tournament will be held Aug. 22 in front of Pasadena City Hall.

The event, co-sponsored by the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce and Kaiser Permanente, features a format that pairs players based on age, skill and experience.

The event also includes a clinic sponsored by the Clippers and free throw, three-point and slam dunk contests.

Registration for adult basketball leagues in Azusa is open for competition that begins during the third week of September.

Games for the two six-team leagues will be played at the Memorial Park Recreation Center.
