IRVINE : 6 Seek Mayor’s Post on Crowded Ballot

Share

Six residents will compete to become the city’s next mayor in the Nov. 3 election.

The filing deadline was Wednesday.

Altogether, 14 people are running for City Council, creating the most crowded ballot since 1976.

Three of the 14 filed nomination papers Wednesday within hours of the deadline.

Candidates who filed for mayor Wednesday are: Michael Ward, 46, a salesman and member of the Planning Commission, and David Fondots, 29, who owns and runs a telecommunications company. Filing for council was Kenneth Bruner, 49, a staff aide to county Supervisor Thomas F. Riley and member of the Orange County Transportation Commission.

Ward and Bruner were appointed to their commissions by Councilman Bill Vardoulis. Vardoulis said earlier this week he would not seek reelection after serving a two-year term on the council. Mayor Sally Anne Sheridan, a 10-year member of the council, has also decided not to run again.

Cameron, 46, a businesswoman and former Irvine Unified School District board member; Marc Goldstone, 36, a computer engineer and active opponent of two recently approved Irvine Co. housing projects; Albert E. Nasser, 74, a retired attorney and unsuccessful candidate in the last two council races, and Leslie J. Racey, 65.
