Art Auction Raises $100,000 for L.A. Free Clinic

Friends of the Los Angeles Free Clinic netted more than $100,000 at a July 19 benefit at the Pacific Design Center. The silent auction included more than 550 items, including works by David Hockney, Sam Francis, Salvador Bru and others.

AIDS Project Los Angeles netted more than $250,000 at its eighth annual summer party at Universal Studios. The Aug. 1 “Backlot Blowout” was sponsored by Jubilaeum, Von Zerneck-Sertner Films, KIIS-FM 102.7, Dana Miller and Keith-Beer Medical Group. Proceeds will be used to fund services for AIDS patients and for an educational outreach program. Barry Krost and Bob Sertner were co-chairmen.

Hollywood Arts Council’s June 7 “Night in Hollywood” gala, held at the Tamara Villa, netted $15,000. Sponsors were Somers Gin of the House of Seagram, Eastman Kodak, Gannett Outdoor Advertising, Heublein, Paramount Pictures, USAir, Universal Studios, Rail Construction Corp. and Patrick Media. The council is dedicated to supporting the arts in Hollywood.

Heal the Bay netted $20,000 at its Aug. 1 beach party at the Sand & Sea Club in Santa Monica. The House of Seagram sponsored the “Cool-O-Rama” benefit. Proceeds will provide research, and public outreach and policy-oriented programs designed to stop pollution in Southern California. Adi Liberman, is executive director of HTB.

National Council of Jewish Women’s “Fabulous Outdoor Flea Market,” held July 19, raised $16,000 to underwrite the organization’s non-sectarian community service and outreach programs. This tri-annual event is a source of funding for job training and literacy programs for homeless women and their children.

Muscular Dystrophy Assn. received more than $28,000 raised at a Brunswick Pocket 500 Singles Classic July 16 at the Brunswick Matador Bowl in Northridge. Brunswick Recreation Centers, an 18-year sponsor for MDA, raised more than $550,000 in 1991.

Family Assistance Program received $42,000 raised at the fifth annual “Fine Art of Helping” gala at Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel on July 23. Three-hundred guests sampled food from 25 area restaurants and bid on works of art by Almaraz, Chagall, Renoir and other artists. The event was sponsored by Galerie Michael and Spare Change Project. FAP provides long-term support in rehabilitating homeless families.

Easter Seal Society of Los Angeles & Orange Counties, Inc. raised more than $110,000 at the Second Annual Toshiba Volleyball Beach Bash, July 18 at Will Rogers State Beach and Huntington Beach. More than 120 corporations participated in the fund-raisers, sponsored by Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. and Electronic Imaging Division, among others. KTTV-Fox Television, K-Earth 101 FM, Arrowhead Water, Pepsi-Cola West, Park & Sun Nets and Mohinder Sports were among the other sponsors.

The Society of Junior Fellows of The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens Society, raised $50,000 at the June 6 Arabella Ball. The gala was sponsored by Asanti Fine Jewellers of Pasadena, Frances Klein Estate Jewels, Rodeo Drive, Tiffany & Co., Troy & Company Jewelers of Pasadena and others. Proceeds benefit Huntington’s education program.
