A 15-year-old boy suspected of killing his 11-year-old stepbrother and critically wounding his mother in a knife and ax attack as they slept was arrested Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Christopher Lee Andrews was spotted in a gas station on East Firestone Boulevard by a relative who called Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies. “Our deputies were only a second away and they scooped him up,” said Sgt. David Cowen.

Andrews was turned over to Los Angeles police detectives, who had been seeking him since the Monday morning attacks in the 5900 block of 8th Avenue in the Hyde Park area.

His stepbrother, James Williams, whose throat was slashed in the assault, died Wednesday. Andrews’ mother, Brenda Mae Williams, 37, is on life-support systems at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center. Police said investigators have not determined a motive for the attacks.
