Scotty Bowman, who reportedly was near a contract agreement, said he won’t return as coach of the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins but will remain as director of player development.

Assistant coach Pierre McGuire is a candidate to replace Bowman, and there was speculation that former coach and general manager Eddie Johnston is under consideration.
