SOUTH LOS ANGELES : Melee Erupts After Apparent Gang Killing

Share

Police officers arriving at the scene of an apparent gang-related homicide in South Los Angeles were met by a barrage of rocks and bottles thrown from an angry crowd of about 100 friends of the dead man, authorities said Tuesday.

No officers were injured in the disturbance late Monday night at 48th Place and Figueroa Street, which was broken up after about 1 1/2 hours by 40 officers in riot gear. Two men were arrested--one for challenging police to fight and the other for attempting to incite a riot, officers said.

The victim, 24-year-old Winford Massey, was killed by multiple gunshots to the chest, said Detective Richard Hoffman.

Massey, who police suspect was killed by rival gang members, lived in the neighborhood. However, officials said they did not know the degree to which he may have been affiliated with the suspected gang members who squared off with police.
