PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Sore Arm Might Limit Marinovich Saturday

Share

Todd Marinovich came to training camp armed and ready.

Determined to win the Raiders’ starting quarterback job from Jay Schroeder, Marinovich threw hard during the off-season. He kept up the pace in drills, workouts and exhibitions.

But now, with decision time near, Marinovich’s left arm has temporarily gone dead, the result of too much work.

“He’s got a sore arm,” Raider Coach Art Shell said, “but he says he feels OK.”

It is what baseball pitchers in spring training call the dead-arm stage, more annoying than serious.

But it has cost Marinovich two days of work at the team’s Oxnard training camp and could cost him playing time in Saturday’s 1 p.m. Coliseum exhibition against the Washington Redskins unless he is able to bounce back today.

“If he doesn’t work too much early in the week, it’s difficult to throw him in there,” Shell said. “But if he works (today), he’ll get his share of time.”

Marinovich said he will be ready.

The Raiders will hold their final two-a-day workout today. Thursday, the club will have a single workout, then break camp in Oxnard and reconvene at their regular-season headquarters in El Segundo.

Running back Marcus Allen and wide receiver Tim Brown, both holdouts until last week, volunteered for extra work in the special-teams drills. Both will see their first exhibition action Saturday night.

Defensive lineman Chester McGlockton, the team’s top draft choice, isn’t expected to play against the Redskins. McGlockton suffered a sprained foot in the first exhibition 12 days ago against the San Francisco 49ers and hasn’t practiced since. He hopes to be ready by the season opener on Sept. 6.
