SAN DIEGO : Deadlocked Jury to Resume Talks
The jury deliberating a case against a man accused of murdering an illegal alien who ran through the defendant’s back yard told a San Diego Superior Court judge they were deadlocked, but later the panel said further discussion might help them reach a verdict.
On the third day of deliberations in the case of Harold Bassham, a 20-year-old accused of gunning down a Mexican on April 20, the jury eventually agreed to return to deliberations.
But an emergency affecting the family of one juror will delay the restart of discussions until Wednesday.
Reporting a 9-3 split, the jury foreman originally agreed with Judge Frank A. Brown’s comment that “at this point, you cannot agree on anything.”
But when Brown individually polled members of the jury, 10 people said a decision might be reached after further deliberations. In fact, one juror even reported that he had not yet reached a conclusion in the case.
Bassham, accused of first-degree murder, maintains that he shot Humberto Reyes Miranda after the migrant approached him with a rock.
