Steven Bochco Lays Down the Law : WHO’S HE KIDDING?

“I f I Ran a Network . . . ,” last Sunday’s commentary by television producer Steven Bochco (“Hill Street Blues,” “L.A. Law”) has prompted a heavy response from readers. A sampling:

Bochco would sure fix network TV all right. When that day comes I’ll throw my TV out. It’s obvious he’s a product of the ‘60s. I’m the enemy; a decent, moral 27-year-old mother of three who grew up watching lots of TV.

Bochco only wants to add to what’s already wrong with TV. The influence that TV has had on the youth of today is evident. Never before have they been in such turmoil--teen-age pregnancies, sexual diseases, suicide, rampant gang violence.

Would Bochco be pleased with nudity, graphic sex scenes, gruesome murders and profanity on TV? He needs to cross over to the big screen if that’s the case. The inner workings of TV are immaterial to me, but I disagree with his idea of banishing network censors. I don’t think enough is censored as it is.

Ignorance breeds ignorance, and it’s a scary thought when decency and integrity are ridiculed.
