POLITICAL BRIEFING

HOUSE WATCH: A total of 16 House incumbents have lost primaries so far this year, and Oklahoma voters may add two more to the list Tuesday in their state’s primary. . . . Democrat Mike Synar, by far the most liberal of Oklahoma’s congressmen, faces a tough race against a former district attorney. In endorsing his foe, one local newspaper recently chided Synar for representing the interests of “Hollywood and New York more than he has his own district.” Also in trouble is Republican Mickey Edwards, whose impeccably conservative voting record was tarnished when it was revealed he wrote close to 400 bad checks in the House banking scandal. . . . If both lose, the nation’s voters will have tied the modern-day mark of unseating 18 House incumbents in primaries--set in 1946--with several more nominating contests to come.
