LOCAL NOTES : Finish in France Puts Surfer Slater in Lead
Kelly Slater of Huntington Beach finished second at the $120,000 Lacanau, France, pro surfing championships and moved into the overall lead on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals tour.
Slater lost to Australia’s Tony Ray, 29.3 to 21.5, in the finals. Slater has 3,550 overall points, five points ahead of defending world champion Damien Hardman of Australia.
Former Huntington Beach resident Lisa Andersen won the women’s division at Lacanau, her second victory of the year. She beat defending world champion Wendy Botha of Australia, 19.5 to 19.2.
The next stop on the tour is the $120,000 Rip Curl Pro, which starts Wednesday at Hossegor, France.
Dusty Dvorak of Laguna Beach will be among 24 former beach players competing against the U.S. men’s and women’s Olympic teams at the Legends of Volleyball tournament Sept. 19 at Redondo Beach.
