COSTA MESA — An 8-year-old Costa Mesa girl was slightly injured Wednesday afternoon when someone in a passing car shot at her with a paint pellet gun, police said.
The red pellet splattered on the back of Lisa Vlici’s neck but did not cause serious injury, authorities said.
The drive-by attack at 3:35 p.m. apparently was random, Sgt. Tom Curtis said.
The girl was standing on a grassy median along Harbor Boulevard near Gisler Avenue with her mother and 17-year-old brother when the shot was fired from a southbound car, police and family members said. As the little girl cried in pain, the three ran across Harbor Boulevard into a Denny’s restaurant to call police, said Lisa’s brother, Shea.
“We had no idea what happened until we heard the shot and she started crying,” said Linda Vlici, Lisa’s mother, as paramedics attended to the girl in a restaurant booth.
