Santa Monica : Gas Leak Stops Drill
A Santa Monica Fire Department hazardous materials drill was interrupted by the real thing Tuesday.
Firefighters stopped practicing and went into action when a gas meter in an alley behind the 1100 block of 6th Street started leaking after it was rammed by a motorist, Fire Department spokeswoman Roni Roseberg said.
The leak was large enough for officials to begin evacuating nearby structures as a precaution against a fire or explosion.
Disaster was averted when gas company workers arrived to seal off the leak. No one was injured.
