Sirens sounded off, members of Orange County’s Search and Rescue Team climbed aerial ladders and children had their pictures taken on a police motorcycle Saturday at a Santa Ana shopping center, where the city’s fire and police departments and other groups demonstrated the latest in public safety equipment.

Officials expected more than 15,000 people to visit information booths at the 16th annual show, designed to teach children drug and crime prevention, and what to do in case of a fire or other emergencies.

“There’s a lot of interest this year with South Central Los Angeles (riots) and Hurricane Andrew,” Fire Chief Allen R. (Bud) Carter said.

“People are really interested in our readiness and what we can provide in response and relief.”

Billed as one of Santa Ana’s largest community events, Councilwoman Patricia A. McGuigan said the show also “gives young people a good feeling about the Police and Fire departments.

“And,” the Santa Ana councilwoman added, “I think it’s a good thing to show that we care about the community.”
