Rent Control and the Election in Santa Monica

Share

How can you begin your story on Robert Myers and the City Council election with SMRR Chief Propaganda Artist (possibly not his exact title) Steve Alpert’s “expert” analysis that rent control would suffer if a non-SMRR-controlled council were elected--and not have a statement on that topic from anyone else? At the very least, why was it not explained that the rent control law can only be changed by a vote of the people, 70% of whom are renters?

And how can you label our organization, Save Our City, a “markedly more conservative organization than SMRR”--without mentioning that most organizations in the known world are markedly more conservative than SMRR, with the possible exception of Fidel Castro’s friends and the people running Vietnam?

Our members are of all political persuasions. Four of our six steering committee members are actually Democrats, and many people who sent us dues are actually--no kidding--tenants.

I also would have told him that Save Our City has not yet endorsed any candidates, but is in the process of determining which of the 14 independents would be best for Santa Monica.
