A 21-year-old sailor stationed on the San Diego-based Cowpens guided missile cruiser died Monday at Loma Linda Hospital in Riverside County after he tried to elude California Highway Patrol officers on his motorcycle and crashed.
The man, whose name has not been released, led CHP officers on a 100-m.p.h.-chase Sunday on Interstate 15 and California 215, a CHP spokesman in Temecula said. He was critically injured when he left the highway at 90 m.p.h. and struck a curb.
CHP officers clocked him at 100 m.p.h. on Interstate 15, south of Gopher Canyon Road, near Vista. Officers from Oceanside and then Temecula chased him along California 215 until he attempted to exit at Clinton Keith Road and struck a curb.
The man, who was wearing a helmet, flew off his motorcycle and was critically injured.
He died at Loma Linda Hospital Monday but a CHP spokesman said he remained on life support while his organs were removed for a transplant.
