Dagwood to Cater to Blondie on Job

Newsday

If it had been just a bad day on the job, that would be one thing. But for Dagwood Bumstead, it’s been a bad day on the job for, oh, about 50 years.

Last Labor Day, the comic-strip leading man managed to survive his wife Blondie’s announcement that she was leaving her homemaking career to start a catering business with her friend Tootsie.

This Labor Day will find Dagwood--who has been working for the wretched Mr. Dithers since the inauguration of Franklin Roosevelt--packing up his lunch box and setting himself up with a new employer: his wife.

In the next two weeks, Blondie and Tootsie will decide to expand their business, and are looking for a “Jack-of-all-trades.” Then along comes Dagwood.

Amanda Hass, a spokeswoman for King Features Syndicates, wouldn’t say whether Blondie turns out to be a better employer than Mr. Dithers, but she said Dagwood at least has the right attitude going into the job.

She said he often gives up his weekend yard-putterings to help cater birthdays and weddings.
