Bellflower : 6 Schools to Be Renovated With Money From State
The Bellflower Unified School District has been awarded $6.5 million in state funds to upgrade six aging campuses and plan the rehabilitation of three others.
The funding comes from a state program that allows schools to modernize buildings that are more than 30 years old.
Bellflower High School, the Betsy Ross Child Development Center and Jefferson, Washington, Woodruff and Pyle elementary schools have been selected for renovation.
The 44-year-old Bellflower High School modernization will be the most expensive, at $3.3 million. The improvements were designed to make the buildings more energy efficient and will include updating heating systems, insulation, lighting systems, plumbing, and removing windows from some classrooms.
Construction is expected to begin by the end of the 1992-93 school year. The campuses will be upgraded one at time, beginning with Bellflower High, officials said.
The district plans to spend about $150,000 from the award to develop rehabilitation plans for Mayfair High School and Foster and Lindstrom elementary schools.
The district applied for the funds five years ago, officials said.
