Weicker, Activists Outline Plans for Independent Party
Connecticut Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. and political activists from around the nation said Thursday they will establish an Independence Party to revitalize the political system.
“We are launching a new American revolution to restore competition to a political system now paralyzed by the Republican and Democratic parties--the Republi-crat monopoly,” said businessman Gordon Black, a party founder.
Black, of Rochester, N.Y., was among 36 political activists--including Weicker and 1980 independent presidential candidate John B. Anderson--who met in the Chicago area this week.
Organizers plan to launch their party officially with the Federal Election Commission within a week and meet in Washington later this month.
