From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police were keeping a tight lid on the investigation of the kidnaping and murder of a 9-year-old boy. Newspaper accounts suggested that investigators were following up a lead that gang members mistakenly thought Michael Nguyen was the son of one of his mother’s former boyfriends. The former boyfriend became a possible gang target after his sister, who was deeply in debt and had refused gang extortion demands, committed suicide last year, the Oakland Tribune reported, citing court records and sources. The former boyfriend and his sister owned restaurants in Oakland and San Francisco. The boy was kidnaped at gunpoint outside his house when he and his mother arrived home early Wednesday. His body was later found about a mile from the home in Golden Gate Park.
