South Pasadena : Water Rates Increase 54%

Share

Despite strong protests by several residents and local business owners, the City Council last week adopted new water rates that will result in an average 54% increase for residential and commercial users.

In a 4-1 vote, the council endorsed the increase after learning that the water utility is operating at a loss of $500,000 per year. Higher revenues are also needed to replace aging equipment at city reservoirs and to build a reserve fund for emergencies, Public Works Director James Van Winkle said.

The rate hike will boost the average household’s water bill by about $7.70 per month.
